Clayton Bulwer Treaty (April 19, 1850); This treaty was between the United States and Great Britian over their rivalries in Centeral America. During this treaty, Secretary of State John M. Clayton and englishman Sir Henry Bulwer meet to draw up this treaty. This contraversy was mainly fought over a proposed isthmian canal. This treaty solved the solution of the canals by agreeing that neither have complete control over the canal and also that neither of them occupy, fortify, assume, or colonizie any of the dominion in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, the misquito coast, or any part of centeral america. This treaty was swiftly ratified in the Senate but was found as a failure to uphold the Monroe Doctrine.

There was a large issue between the US and Britain over the interpretation of the treaty after both ratified it. The British believed that when they said neither would occupy the land, that it did NOT apply to British Honduras, while the US believed that it did apply to British Honduras, and that the British needed to leave.
